Writing Across the Divides with Dan Costello
Finding Harmony and Creativity Through Multiple Disciplines
Join Dan and his guitar in this interactive discussion covering:
• how to recognize the potential for a piece to become something else of a different genre or discipline
• staying open to how that other discipline might improve or inform the original content
• differences and similarities between songwriting and prose
• seeking inspiration from multiple disciplines (even cooking)
Dan Costello is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and prime staple of the remote but robust music scene in Boise. Armed at an early age with a radio and a baritone ukulele, his love for music led him to a classical guitar degree from Boise State and a full-time professional music career now spanning over twenty years, bending and blending genres as a performer, writer/arranger, educator and simultaneous rabble-rouser/peacemaker in his local community.
As a writer, Dan recently won first place in the 2017 Idaho Writers Guild Writing Contest for his nonfiction memoir entry "Chicken Coop Epiphanies." Though primarily a songwriter, and a recreational writer through journaling and social media platforms, he has shaped and utilized his writing skills in an almost comically diverse range of endeavors: a document developer for a locally-based tech giant; a newsletter writer and editor for a local recreational sport organization; a reviewer for online music sites; a copy editor for ad agencies and web content developers; a script writer and narrator for radio programs and podcasts. He even contributed to a cookbook project, a topic which inspires much passion in his daily life.
Dan resides in Boise, ID with his wife and step-son, along with Nina the dog, Jasper and Ziggy the cats, and a rotating cast of domestic fowl.
